Assessing Socioeconomic Drought Based on a Standardized Supply and Demand Water Index

چکیده

Socioeconomic drought occurs when a water shortage is caused by an imbalance between the supply and demand of resources in natural human socioeconomic systems. Compared with meteorological drought, hydrological agricultural has received relatively little attention. Hence, this study aims to construct universal simple assessment index, Standardized Supply Demand Water Index (SSDWI). Taking Jianjiang River Basin (JJRB) Guangdong Province, China, as example, we analyzed characteristics trends from 1985 2019. The return periods different levels were calculated. relationships among socioeconomic, meteorological, droughts their potential drivers discussed. Results showed that: (1) SSDWI can assess conditions well at basin scale. Based on SSWDI, during 35-year period, 29 occurred basin, average duration 6.16 months severity 5.82. mainly autumn winter, which also had more severe than other seasons. (2) In JJRB, joint “?” “?” for moderate extreme 8.81a 10.81a, 16.49a 26.44a, 41.68a 91.13a, respectively. (3) Because increasing outflow Gaozhou Reservoir, occurrence probability JJRB declined significantly since 2008. Reservoir scheduling helps alleviate basin.

A hybrid framework for assessing socioeconomic drought: Linking climate variability, local resilience, and demand

Socioeconomic drought broadly refers to conditions whereby the water supply cannot satisfy the demand. Most previous studies describe droughts based on large-scale meteorological/hydrologic conditions, ignoring the demand and local resilience to cope with climate variability. Reservoirs provide resilience against climatic extremes and play a key role in water supply and demand management. Here ...

Multivariate Standardized Drought Index: A parametric multi-index model

Defining droughts based on a single variable/index (e.g., precipitation, soil moisture, or runoff) may not be sufficient for reliable risk assessment and decision-making. In this paper, a multivariate, multiindex droughtmodeling approach is proposed using the concept of copulas. The proposed model, named Multivariate Standardized Drought Index (MSDI), probabilist ically combines the Standardize...

A Drought Indicator based on Ecosystem Responses to Water Availability: The Normalized Ecosystem Drought Index

Drought is one of the most destructive natural disasters causing serious damages to human society, and studies have projected more severe and widespread droughts in the coming decades associated with the warming climate. Although several drought indices have been developed for drought monitoring, most of them were based on large scale environmental conditions rather than ecosystem transitional ...

Use of a standardized runoff index for characterizing hydrologic drought

[1] Many current metrics of drought are derived solely from analyses of climate variables such as precipitation and temperature. Drought is clearly a consequence of climate anomalies, as well as of human water use practices, but many impacts to society are more directly related to hydrologic conditions resulting from these two factors. Modern hydrology models can provide a valuable counterpart ...
